Physiotherapy as an allied health profession underwent spectacular changes in the second half of the 20th Century. It made a difference in the life styles of those affected with hereditary diseases, birth defects, athletic injuries, surgical interventions, infectious diseases, acute and chronic diseases affecting most of the body systems. Physiotherapy qualifying programme (BPT) prepares students to function effectively in a rapidly changing the world of health care. It prepares students to be analytical problem solvers who are professional practitioners in their own right. Despite the enormous growth in the act of training plans for physical therapists, the demand for services far outweighs the supply.
Objectives
. To be at the forefront of innovation by consistently up-dating curriculum, course content and practices enabling the students to be competent and well versed in the respective field of study.
. Provide use of cutting edge technology and resources available to ensure effective transaction of the course content.
. To complement classroom learning with interactive learning systems and hands on learning by creating a collaborative Industry University Interface.

What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is an autonomous health profession that is primarily directed towards the prevention or alleviation of movement dysfunction in people. It is concerned with the remediation of impairment, and promotion of mobility, functional ability. The practice of physiotherapy is dedicated to movement sciences and it concerned with the function of body systems.
Physical therapy provides services to individuals and populations to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout the lifespan. This includes providing services in circumstances where movement and function are threatened by ageing, injury, pain, diseases, disorders, conditions or environmental factors. Functional movement is central to what it means to be healthy.
Scope of Physiotherapy
A career in physiotherapy can lead to a variety of interesting and challenging jobs in the health care system. Physiotherapists get specializations in the areas such as Pediatrics, Geriatrics, Neurology, Cardiorespiratory, Orthopedics, Biomechanics, Sports, Gynecology etc.
Physiotherapists can also obtain a doctorate degree and become involved in research.
Physiotherapists that demonstrate a high level of skill, knowledge and competence in their work may find many opportunities for growth, such as moving into supervisory or management positions, teaching positions, or they may decide to open their own physiotherapy clinic or service.
Role of a physiotherapist
Physiotherapists work with patients with physical difficulties that may be a result of illness, injury, disability or aging.
A physiotherapist will need to:
. Work with patients to identify and treat their physical problems.
. Develop treatment programmes.
. Encourage exercise and movement by use of techniques.
. Assist patients following surgery, injury, accident and strokes.
. Enhancing tolerance in exercise and daily activities.
. Educating about the condition and therapy program.
Where do physiotherapists work?
The physiotherapist mainly works in Hospitals, Rehabilitation centres and Private practices. They also work in Nursing Homes, ICU, Industrial health units, MNC's, Schools, Sports clubs or Clinics, the Armed Forces and Universities.
What are the prerequisites to take up a course in physiotherapy?
The requirements for admission into a physiotherapy programme vary from university to university. Generally, students benefit from a strong medical background.
Candidates interested to pursue a career in physiotherapy require a good foundation in English, Chemistry, Biology, Physics etc. with an aggregate of 50% marks.
Course Profile:
The course helps students develop a basic understanding of the human body, based on medical sciences. Training comprises understanding procedures for therapy and related skill training.
The curriculum includes anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, psychology, medicine, surgery, neurology, orthopedics, cardiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, disability prevention, rehabilitation and other subjects. "Course is a combination of theory and practicals.
